The Language Empowerment
Program
Semester/Year
The Language Empowerment Program allows students of all levels, from
true beginners to advanced students, to develop their command of the Spanish
language while acquiring knowledge about Spanish culture and contemporary
society. This program features:

a one-semester or
academic year total immersion language and culture program
-
an initial 4-week
intensive language-only component
-
up to 4 hours of
language instruction per day, including one hour dedicated exclusively
to oral skills development
-
integrated
language program placing ALI
students in classes with other international students from around the
world
-
language class
size 12-15 students
-
content courses
taught using a "sheltered" Spanish approach in which the level of
Spanish used in class gradually intensifies as the semester progresses
-
individualized
academic support and tutoring
-
a variety of
academic options including courses taught in English and direct
enrollment in regular university classes to accommodate all levels of
language proficiency
Recommended credit:
15-18 semester hours
A transcript will be
provided by the Academic Language Institute:
however, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for specific credit
transfer. The academic staff at ALI
will assist in any way possible with this process.
Program features:

Full orientation
session upon arrival and on-going advisement and support throughout the
course of study.

Academic field
trips to locations of cultural interest (possible destinations include
Madrid/Toledo, Barcelona, Granada, Cuenca, Mallorca, and Sevilla among
others).

Periodic bulletins
with listings of local cultural and sports activities.

Conversational
language exchange opportunities with Spanish students at the University
of Alicante.

Use of all
University of Alicante sports facilities including indoor swimming pool,
gym, weight room, tennis and basketball courts, etc..

Full-time
experienced resident director and designated university liaison to
assist students in arranging for any special interest activity or to
accommodate any special need.

Co and
extra-curricular activities to complement the academic program including
visits to local sites of interest, cultural activities, and special
interest classes. (Some activities and courses require the payment of an
activity fee.)

Survey of Spanish Literature in Translation (taught in

This course analyzes major works of
Spanish literary history through the study of selected excerpts in
translation contextualized in place, time and position in world
literature. A selection from the following works and authors will be
studied in class: El Poema de Mío Cid, El Libro de Buen Amor, La
Celestina, Lazarillo de Tormes, Santa Teresa de Jesús,
Cervantes, Quevedo, Calderón de la Barca, Jovellanos, Galdós, Clarín,
Pardo Bazán, Valle Inclán, Azorín, Unamuno, Machado, García Lorca,
Aleixandre, Blas de Otero, Martín Gaite, Pérez Reverte. |

Contemporary Spanish Society (taught in English)

This course is designed to offer
structured information about issues related to Spanish society from
the transition to the present time and to provide a forum for
discussion for students as they interact with the people and
institutions of Spain. The following topics will be covered in
class: The Physical and Geo-political Divisions of Spain; A Brief
History of the Last Half of the 20th Century; Spain as a
Constitutional Monarchy; the Educational System; the Workplace;
Family; Youth and the Elderly; High and Popular Culture in Spain
(art, music, festivals, gastronomy, rituals); Spain in a broader
context, Relations with the EU, Latin America, Northern Africa and
the US. |

Contemporary Spanish Literature

This course will examine in depth a
selection of literary works by the most important authors beginning
with the Generation of ´98 to the present. All genres will be
included. To analyze these works, a commentary of texts methodology
will be used. Authors studied include Unamuno, Baroja, Machado,
García Lorca, Alberti, Salinas, Cernuda, Miguel Hernández, Celaya,
Rosa Chacel, Delibes, Goytisolo, Muñoz Molina, Soledad Puértolas,
Buero Vallejo, Sanchis Sinisterra, Els Joglars. |

Museum-Based Survey of Spanish Art
(offered in both Spanish and
English)

This course offers students the
opportunity to study pieces of art that they are actually seeing in
their visits to museums around Spain. In-class introductions to
works students will view during their museum visits provide them
with the background information they need to be able to understand
the artists, the times, prevailing artistic styles and movements,
and the specific pieces themselves. Museums visited include the
Prado, the Reina Sofia, the Thyssen, the Picasso Museum, The Museum
of Abstract Art (Cuenca), and several other museums and artistic and
architectural pieces in Granada, Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante,
Valencia, Murcia and other sites around Spain. |

The Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago is the
quintessential experiential learning opportunity. Pilgrims from all
over the world have been walking this historic trail from the
French-Spanish border to the city of Santiago de Compostela
virtually without interruption since the 9th century. The unique
combination of history, art, music, religion, architecture and urban
development combined with personal physical effort and an
unparalleled opportunity to commune with nature and live and
interact with other “pilgrims” along the way, offers participants a
complete academic and personal growth experience. The course for
credit entails 20 hours of classroom sessions and a one-week hike
along the trail. (Students must be able to walk approximately 15-18
miles per day. This course requires an extra travel fee.) |

Business Courses

Each semester the Department of Economics at the University of
Alicante offers several business courses taught in English to both
Spanish and international students. Course offerings include Economy
of the European Union, International Monetary Economics, Human
Resources Management, Macroeconomics and Politics, Environment and
Development, International Marketing Communications, and Marketing
in the European Union. (Not all courses are taught every semester.)
