The Language Empowerment Program

Intensive Semester

This twelve-week program, offered in the fall and in the spring, gives students the possibility of completing a full semester's work with time left over to travel and experience Spain or Europe within the regular one-semester period they generally dedicate to study abroad.

Students complete 180 contact hours of language instruction and 90 hours of Spanish literature, civilization, or art for a total of 270 hours of classroom instruction. The experiential learning course "The Camino de Santiago" and a selection of business courses taught in English are also available to participants.

The language program provides three hours of Spanish language instruction a day, Monday through Friday, at five levels of instruction ranging from true beginners to near-native. The methodology used emphasizes communication based on the progressive study of lexicon, grammar and structure, syntax, and style.

Recommended credit: 12-15 semester hours

A transcript will be provided by the Academic Language Institute: however, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for specific credit transfer.  The academic staff at ALI will assist in any way possible with this process.

For a full description of course offerings and program features, click on "Language Empowerment" and scroll down the page.

Intensive Short Courses

This option is ideal for students or professionals who do not have an entire semester to dedicate to study abroad but want to improve their Spanish language skills. Participants are tested for placement in the appropriate level of instruction (from true-beginner to near-native) and attend 20 hours of class per week. Emphasis is on active and practical communication.

Courses are available in four-, six- or eight-week blocks with start dates throughout the year. Click on "Dates and Fees" for further information.

A "diploma" and an official grade report will be issued by the University of Alicante.  However, it is each student's responsibility to arrange for specific credit transfer if so desired.  The academic staff at ALI will assist in any way possible with this process.
