A Course for Heritage Speakers
of Spanish
This program is designed with the heritage
speaker of Spanish in mind but is also appropriate for any student who has
significant life experience speaking Spanish and is interested in learning
more about the Latino community in the United States. Students will complete
a course of study which combines language development and historical,
cultural and literary studies.
ALI-H 350
Spanish for Heritage Speakers
This class develops both communicative and formal language competence by
building on the life experience and prior studies the participants bring to
class. A comparative study of idiosyncratic and/or regional usage and
standard usage will complement the review of formal grammatical and
structural concepts. Students will learn to communicate effectively both
orally and in written format using many different registers. A workshop
approach will be used to stimulate active participation in every session.

Introduction to Translating and Interpreting.
This course allows heritage speakers of Spanish to learn the basic
techniques and strategies of translating and interpreting in order to
prepare them for professional level language mediation work. This a
burgeoning new field in need of trained professionals and heritage speakers
are especially well-suited for the rigors of this highly specialized,
language-based career.

Hispanic Literature from the United States (Texts in Spanish)
This course is taught in Spanish and covers the panorama of the significant
literature written in Spanish by Hispanics in the United States since
Spanish Colonial times to the present. The course provides a theoretical
approach to the study of minority literature and through an anthology of
this literature, the student is able to appreciate its major works.

Spain in the Hispanic World: A Historical Perspective of Relations between
U.S. Hispanics and Spain
The first half of this course takes an historical approach to the
relationship that existed between the Hispanic community in the United
States and Spain until the independence of Mexico based on the enormous
number of historical records related to the geographical areas of the United
States that were once part of the Spanish Colonial Empire. In the second
half, students examine the similarities and differences that exist between
Spain, Latin American countries, and Hispanics in the United States today.
Topics covered will include religion, linguistic variation, and economic,
political and social realities.

Cultural Interaction between the U.S. Hispanic Community and Contemporary
Spain
This course will examine the mutual influence of U.S. Hispanic culture and
Spanish popular culture, with film, journalism and literary discourse being
the media through which this influence is seen. In addition to examples from
these media, students will study Latino music, gastronomy, dance and other
elements of popular culture from both the United States and Spain.
Recommended credit: 15 semester hours

however, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for specific credit
transfer. The academic staff at ALI
will assist in any way possible with this process.
Program features:

Full orientation
session upon arrival and on-going advisement and support throughout the
course of study.

Academic field
trips to locations of cultural interest (possible destinations include
Madrid/Toledo, Barcelona, Granada, Cuenca, Mallorca, and Sevilla among
others).

Periodic bulletins
with listings of local cultural and sports activities.

Integration with Spanish students at the University
of Alicante.

Use of all
University of Alicante sports facilities including indoor swimming pool,
gym, weight room, tennis and basketball courts, etc..

Full-time
experienced resident director and designated university liaison to
assist students in arranging for any special interest activity or to
accommodate any special need.

Co and
extra-curricular activities to complement the academic program including
visits to local sites of interest, cultural activities, and special
interest classes. (Some activities and courses require the payment of an
activity fee.
