En Busca de Nuestras Raíces:

A Course for Heritage Speakers of Spanish

This program is designed with the heritage speaker of Spanish in mind but is also appropriate for any student who has significant life experience speaking Spanish and is interested in learning more about the Latino community in the United States. Students will complete a course of study which combines language development and historical, cultural and literary studies.

ALI-H 350 Spanish for Heritage Speakers
This class develops both communicative and formal language competence by building on the life experience and prior studies the participants bring to class. A comparative study of idiosyncratic and/or regional usage and standard usage will complement the review of formal grammatical and structural concepts. Students will learn to communicate effectively both orally and in written format using many different registers. A workshop approach will be used to stimulate active participation in every session.

ALI-H 351 Introduction to Translating and Interpreting.
This course allows heritage speakers of Spanish to learn the basic techniques and strategies of translating and interpreting in order to prepare them for professional level language mediation work. This a burgeoning new field in need of trained professionals and heritage speakers are especially well-suited for the rigors of this highly specialized, language-based career.

ALI-H 352 Hispanic Literature from the United States (Texts in Spanish)
This course is taught in Spanish and covers the panorama of the significant literature written in Spanish by Hispanics in the United States since Spanish Colonial times to the present. The course provides a theoretical approach to the study of minority literature and through an anthology of this literature, the student is able to appreciate its major works.

ALI-H 353 Spain in the Hispanic World: A Historical Perspective of Relations between U.S. Hispanics and Spain
The first half of this course takes an historical approach to the relationship that existed between the Hispanic community in the United States and Spain until the independence of Mexico based on the enormous number of historical records related to the geographical areas of the United States that were once part of the Spanish Colonial Empire. In the second half, students examine the similarities and differences that exist between Spain, Latin American countries, and Hispanics in the United States today. Topics covered will include religion, linguistic variation, and economic, political and social realities.

ALI-H 354 Cultural Interaction between the U.S. Hispanic Community and Contemporary Spain
This course will examine the mutual influence of U.S. Hispanic culture and Spanish popular culture, with film, journalism and literary discourse being the media through which this influence is seen. In addition to examples from these media, students will study Latino music, gastronomy, dance and other elements of popular culture from both the United States and Spain.
