 Custom-Designed Programs

The Academic Language Institute is dedicated to meeting the needs of institutions, individuals and groups. We specialize in listening to our clients and making every effort to meet their needs.  Some of the services we offer are:

On-site supervision and coordination of university sponsored programs:  Many universities develop programs abroad for their students rather than sending them to pre-established courses that do not meet their specific needs. Some send faculty from their home institution to accompany students, supervise their academic progress and perhaps teach a course, while others send students without this additional support. In either case, having a person on-site who knows not only the U.S. university system but also the academic culture of the "host" country can help faculty and students avoid many of the problems that turn a wonderful academic and personal experience into an on-going challenge. The Academic Language Institute offers a full range of support services for any student or group that may need assistance with housing, medical care, co-curricular activities, emergencies, university and community integration, or general adaptation issues. These services can make the difference between a positive and negative experience for the university, faculty and students.

Internships: Internships or volunteer work experiences have become a popular element of many study programs. However, these opportunities need close supervision and planning when students decide to do an internship in a country with a different language and work culture.  ALI can arrange and supervise professional internships for students as part of their study abroad program.

Winter Term Programs: Many universities encourage students to take advantage of the winter term or interterm break that is built into their schedules. This is a perfect time for a short, intensive study abroad experience. ALI can organize two- or three- week courses to meet the specific needs of groups from any discipline or professional field.  Contact us about this option.

Spanish for Specific Purposes:  In conjunction with local educational institutions in Alicante, ALI is able to design special interest courses that combine Spanish for Specific Purposes instruction with practical experiences at institutions related to the field. These courses are ideal for groups whose members would like to combine professional development and a stay in a lovely seaside city which offers many cultural, sports and leisure time activities.  Examples of courses that can be offered include:

Spanish For The Medical Profession: A course designed for health care personnel including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, public health officials, medical and nursing students who are interested in a combined approach to enhancing their ability to communicate in Spanish through formal language study and interaction with the Spanish medical community. The course will provide participants an opportunity to meet Spanish health care professionals and observe how work is done at a large university hospital, at community health care centers and at regular office visits at the public health care system’s ambulatorios.

Spanish For International Trade And Commerce: The language component of this course would provide students with the basic structures and keys they need to understanding Spanish business documents. Development of the skills necessary to manage both professional business correspondence and oral communication is emphasized. The complementary activities include lectures by professors and guest speakers from business and governmental institutions on topics related to Spanish and European business practices and cultural sensitivity in business interactions. Visits to local businesses and institutions  complement classroom sessions.

Spanish for Tourism (hotel management, restauration, leisure time activities, rural tourism, extreme tourism, eco-tourism): Alicante is Spain's number one destination for in-country tourism and a major draw for international tourism from Europe, North America and Asia. This course offers participants language instruction developed for specialists in tourism-related professions and an extensive co-curricular, out-of-class component which puts participants in direct contact with professionals from the tourism industry.  Guest speakers include local government officials, economists, representatives from the hotel sector, restauranteers, and travel industry specialists.

Spanish for Academic Purposes: This course is designed to provide students with an intensive course in Spanish language development for academic purposes with special emphasis on the language of science and engineering. The complementary component puts participants in contact with scientists and engineers in several university departments where they can exchange ideas, visit labs, learn about the current research projects being carried out, and establish contacts for possible future collaborations.

Personalized attention and support:  ALI will make every effort to help individual students meet their specific study goals by helping them navigate the academic waters once they are on site. While many students stay within a pre-arranged study program, there are others who have a specific area of interest or required course that they would like to be able to pursue while on their study abroad program. There are many ways to achieve positive results for these students, if knowledgeable people are available to assist them.

There are also professional groups and organizations that would like to offer their members a professional growth opportunity or study/travel plan.  We will work closely with any group to help design and organize a specific program for them, whether it be based at one site or itinerate in nature.  These programs are designed to engage the mind while enjoying a visit to another country.  Services include organizing classes, guest lectures, contacts with professional counterparts, and visits to professional venues as well as arranging lodging, field trips, and leisure time activities.
